Networking IP and Fibre ChannelFibre Technologies already supplies some of the world’s most well known service providers with demarcation products for 10Mb, 100Mb, 1Gb and 10Gb Ethernet, to use on the end of their fibres, so they can in turn offer their end customers an Ethernet service.
These LAN extension products, can offer either a copper interface or a fibre optic interface depending on the speed that is needed and where it is required. They can also be managed by the end customer, the service provider or even by a support and maintenance company to enable performance monitoring, remote testing and rate limiting.
Under the same umbrella are Layer 2 switches that are available with multiple ports that can either be copper or fibre, or a mix of both. Functions such as QoS, CoS and VPN capabilities are standard.
Similar products are available for Fibre Channel protocols that currently support 1Gb, 2Gb and 4Gb and, in the very near future, 8Gb and 10Gb.
